Skullcap has a long history of use in medicine dating back to Native American tribes who used it for centuries to treat menstrual disorders, digestive and kidney problems, and nervousness. European settlers and folk herbalists learned how to use Skullcap from Native Americans and brought it back to Great Brittian in the 19^th century. Skullcap is now largely used as a sedative and sleeping pill often in combination with other herbs. It can be used as a hot tea, tincture, or in capsule form. The plant is rich in vitamins, minerals, and tannins. Its antioxidant and neuroprotective properties help with oxidative stress and it binds to GABA receptors in the brain assisting in relief from anxiety and depression. Skullcap is also thought to help with withdrawal from drugs, alcohol, and smoking.
