Lobelia contains the alkaloid lobeline, which interacts with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain—the same receptor sites activated by nicotine. Because of this, lobelia has been studied and historically used to support individuals in quitting smoking, helping to ease cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms by mimicking nicotine’s action without delivering its addictive effect.
