Lobelia inflata

Pungent, potent, and historically powerful, lobelia has long been used in traditional Western herbalism to support the respiratory system and ease muscular tension. Lobelia contains the alkaloid lobeline, which interacts with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain, the same receptor sites activated by nicotine. Because of this, lobelia has been studied and historically used to support individuals in quitting smoking, helping to ease cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms by mimicking nicotine’s action without delivering its addictive effect.

In addition to its neurological activity, lobelia is traditionally used as a bronchodilator and expectorant, promoting open airways and supporting natural respiratory clearance. It’s also considered a powerful nervine relaxant, used cautiously to address spasms or tension, especially in the lungs and chest.
